“It’s not automatic, you know,” his mum told him once, one of the last times he spoke to her. “Most mothers grow into it, maybe, but it isn’t you they have to put up with, is it? You don’t get handed a baby and just like that a flip switches and you love them. That’s not how it works.”
He was fifteen, gangly and sullen and dripping blood on the linoleum from a split lip, and at the time he believed her.
Right up until his own, squalling baby is set, flailing and slippery, into his arms, he believes her.
